Study - Pool Chlorinator

Business Case
We developed a low-cost pool chlorinator with
difference. Many pool chlorinators use 2 plates and an
electrical current to produce chlorine. A common problem is that
the chlorinator requires regular maintenance. One of the
electrodes requires cleaning before the white calcium build-up becomes
too thick. This chlorinator has a unique feature. It does
not require this maintenance. It a great product differentiator
in a competitive market.

The product
The chlorinator was based around a low-cost PIC microprocessor.
The display is a 20 characters by 4 lines LCD. 4 push buttons
are used to interact with the display and setup the chlorinator. The bottom line of the
display was used to display 'soft keys' - like on a mobile phone.
The chlorinator can be programmed to run for certain hours of the day
on a 24 hour or 7 day timer. The current to the chlorinator can
be adjusted using a dial.
The project included a product proposal, electronics
design, schematic entry, PCB layout, [embedded] software for the PIC microprocessor and
prototype testing. The customer supplied the product housing and arranged the manufacturing. |
